The Dune House is a bold reinterpretation of the classic English seaside home, designed by the renowned Norwegian practice Jarmund/Vigsnæs (JVA). Located in Thorpeness on the Suffolk coast, it seamlessly merges modern design with the natural beauty of its surroundings, creating a residence that is both sculptural and deeply rooted in its environment.
Every detail of The Dune House has been crafted to enhance the living experience. The ground floor, with its expansive living area, kitchen, and en-suite bedroom, is nestled into the dunes, offering a sense of protection while opening up to the surrounding landscape through panoramic sliding glass doors. These doors transform the space, allowing for an uninterrupted flow between interior and exterior—a feature that invites designers to explore how architecture and nature can interact harmoniously.
Upstairs, the design embraces the unexpected. Each of the four double bedrooms features a bathtub strategically positioned to allow views of the North Sea or the tranquil meadows. These moments of indulgence, paired with the simplicity of clean lines and natural light, create spaces that feel personal and connected to the environment. A library and rooftop terrace further enhance the sense of calm and contemplation, offering places to unwind and soak in the views.
The material palette is a thoughtful balance between the grounded and the airy. Concrete, glass, and aluminum anchor the ground floor, while timber planks on the upper level reference the nautical character of coastal architecture. The orange-tinted steel roof reflects the shifting colors of the sky and sea, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow that brings the house to life throughout the day.
